(BIO) A Proposal to Provide Technical Assistance to Increase the Research Competitiveness of MSIs, Community Colleges, and URM Faculty to BIO-wide Programs

The project’s goals are to: (1) increase institutional awareness of competitive funding resources to build biology research training capacity of URM faculty at non-R1 institutions and those serving at MSIs and CCs; (2) broaden participation of faculty at MSIs and CCs in biological science research, and (3) promote their collaborative grant-writing efforts.

With support from the National Science Foundation, QEM will conduct a two-day Information Sharing and Funding Opportunities Workshop for 30 faculty to expand their awareness of specific NSF BIO-wide programs and aid in their proposal preparation. This workshop will be designed to aid new faculty and those without prior NSF funding gain the knowledge necessary to compete for grant funding needed to support their research, teaching, and training of their underrepresented minority students.

Faculty participants will expand their required 1-page project summaries to full proposals through the development of a post-workshop support system with QEM consultants to offer mentorship and guidance to encourage workshop participants submitting proposals.

NSF Program Directors will be on-hand to present informational sessions on BIO directorate programs relevant to participants during the two-day workshop to increase their awareness and encourage the submission of proposals of URM faculty at non-R1 institutions and faculty at MSIs, CCs, and those within EPSCOR states (LA, MS, AL) to NSF. These sessions will be similar to those conducted via virtual office hours or at conferences but be more focused on the target audience.
